This painting explores the colour and beauty in that which appears initial dark, worn out and heavy. There’s a subtle ‘softness’ and ‘vulnerability’ that lingers within, slowly revealing itself, as it emerges from and through the various layers, like a lotus flower, perhaps, emerging from the mud.

‘Man’, is a painting that came about when I encountered a person that turned my life around and a little upside down. It’s not only about my relation to this man, but is also about my relation to my own masculine and feminine within…these different aspects of myself.
The word ‘Man’ is written on the painting, but a feminine presence is very much there, lingering softly, as opposed to being hard-edged and direct, like a word.
In many ways, I can say the presence of this person provoked an exploration and investigation of the duality that contrasts and compliments within. The painting ‘Man’ reflects both an external scenario in itself, and a deeper internal recognition of who I am, as a multifaceted being.
When I look into this painting, it reflects an inner dialogue, between different aspects of myself, in response to my experience and my surroundings.
Often my paintings resonate some personal meaning. I like to think of them as abstract poems that express and honour different memories and moments of this life.

This work, similarly to Madness Made Easy, explores the luminosity and colour in that which appears initially dark, worn out and heavy. That subtle ‘softness’ that lingers beyond, slowly revealing itself, as it emerges from and through the various layers, like rays of light that encourage us forward through the challenges.
In the ‘Depths and Emergence’ series, on a compositional level, I often divide my paintings down the middle with a vertical split, and from there attempt to combine and unite these dualities into one whole image or painting. It’s my way of investigating and attempting to recognize the merging together of these dualities and differences.
It seems our human nature is to divide things into good and bad, right and wrong, beautiful and ugly, weak and strong, poor and abundant, dark and light... which gives us our reference points on where we want to go on this huge scale of experience. In so doing, we are able to recognize them in their different compartments --isolated--as individual concepts, which in turn helps us formulate our perceptions.
But this separating also creates limitations on what we are willing to accept about ourselves. Often we honour our luminescence and are less appreciative of our shadows, but each possess qualities and resources. Attempting to acknowledge and accept and go beyond the duality and complexity within, allows these different elements that we are made up of, to eventually dance more freely together, perhaps towards a complimentary and interwoven whole.

Depth and Emergence
This series heavily focuses on the influence of time and its effects on objects. The interrelation between time and the inevitable transformation of material, such as weathered doors and walls, is a source of inspiration for me. Imprinted by the beauty of experience, these surfaces parallel the depth and layers of the human existence.
Especially in this series, I work in an additive and deductive manner, layering and removing coats of paint from the canvas, building and then scraping away at it, in order to reveal the hidden colors and textures beneath.
For me, this series of paintings communicate strength and vulnerability. Like a lotus flower emerging from the mud, my work acts as analogies of the human condition: the hardships and triumphs, the darkness and luminosity.
