Up in Smoke
The Smoke series pays homage to fire, as the vitality of life, and air, the invisible surrounding us.. The realms of heaven and earth meet in the middle and do a dance, where air dominates and extinguishes fire, creating smoke.
When I witnessed my father passing, it was like a flame had gone out, but there was the feeling like smoke was still lingering in the space for some time afterwards. From fire to air, to that which is ethereal.
Black Tourmaline
A Mohawk shaman sister once shared with me that the semi-precious stone, Black Tourmaline, has the ability to heal and clear negativity from a space. The day before first meeting her I had a dream where I was painting 2 very large black canvases. I connected the dream and the conversation and from it was born the series ‘Black Tourmaline’.
‘Because of its dark coloration, this stone has an ability to absorb negative energy without compromising its own energy. Because it can absorb negativity, it can both protect and cleanse people and their environments.’
I loved that idea, and thought how wonderful it might be to create paintings infused with the intention of helping heal and protect spaces.
